After years of working and looking forward to retirement, the big day is finally here. You did the best you could to prepare financially. Your income is less, forcing you to make difficult decisions. This isn’t very much fun. By 2018 the experts predict that one out of every two senior citizens in the U.S. will be caring for an elderly parent or grandchild. There’s never enough money and the stress seems unbearable. Your health is declining. You try to grow old gracefully but it’s hard. It’s difficult to ask for help so you retreat into a world of your own.

As a society, we seem to put a lot of emphasis on financial planning for retirement but what about the other aspects of our lives? You might make good decisions and reach retirement with an abundance of wealth but then ask yourself “what now?” Sometimes I think we build retirement up to be greater than it actually is. Too many individuals put off till retirement doing things they would like to do. As we age our family and friends start to die or get sick. Our children are grown possibly living in another town.

It’s critical that in addition to financial planning you think about what kind of activities you’d like to do when you no longer have to go to work. As life changes, change with it. Maybe you can’t dance the way you used to but there’s something you can do. Get involved with other senior citizens and take advantage of programs offered for the elderly. At this point in your life it’s critical to have a support system.

AARP is an excellent resource. Some communities have local meetings. It’s inexpensive to join. You get various discounts, like dining and traveling. They provide group insurance for their members. Most of all they lobby for the rights of senior citizens.

Senior citizens centers are a crucial place of contact for the elderly. They provide activities, speakers, services and information on what’s available in your community. Some provide meals-on-wheels, daily check-up phone calls, minor home repairs, tax assistance, emergency call systems and discounted housing.

In life so much of what happens to us depends upon our attitude. Once you’ve done all you can to prepare for this final stage of your life, it’s time to embrace the change. It will be different but it could be good. It might even be better!

As our population continues to age, I think it’s more critical that we reach out to those in need. We should be more aware of our elderly. They don’t need to be alone all the time. If they don’t reach out to us, we need to reach out to them. Being financially prepared for retirement is important but how we treat our fellow man is even more important.
