Sweating over your high air conditioning bill? Here are some easy tips to lower your air conditioning bill and make summer more comfortable in your home.

Raise the thermometer inside a bit – In the fall we would be constantly chilled if the weather dropped below seventy degrees, so why do we insist on keeping the air conditioning at 68? Many people set their air conditioning down way past where it needs to be. Due to the fact our body heat adjusts to the atmosphere we find ourselves in, remember setting the air to a comfortable 10 degrees lower than the outside air is fine70 degrees is going to feel wonderful if you are walking inside out of a sunny 80 degree weather day, but just as likely 75 degrees will feel like wonderful shelter from a 85 degree day. No need to drop the thermometer down any lower.

Shade/Cover your windows – Up to half a house’s heat comes inside because of heat coming in from the windows. Always keep your blinds or curtains during the day. If you hate that closed in feeling, installing awnings outside the windows will help keep the heat out as well as considering placing trees and shrubbery to shade the house year round if you live in a desert area,

Invest in a fan ventilation system for the whole house- If you constantly find yourself turning up the air to cool the upstairs, consider installing whole house fan ventilation system to move the air current within your house. This way hot air is circulated back down and cool air is allowed to settle. This will decrease the need to keep the air conditioning on full blast all year.

Utilize the natural weather – Even though it may be hot and sticky during the day, in temperamental, highly seasonal areas, oftentimes temperatures will drop drastically at nightfall. If your family is barely home during the day, consider purchasing fans to place in the windows to draw the cool air in so you can leave the air conditioner off for an extra few weeks at the beginning and end of each summer season. It may be the oldest trick in the book, but actually quite effective if the temps drop down to the 60’s at night.

Keep the filter clean- An air conditioning unit with a clean filter will be able to work less as it will provide more cool air per minute. Clogs in the filters will cause interruptions in the air delivery meaning your air conditioner will use twice as much energy cooling your house or apartment as it would normally. Alongside this, it may be a good idea to have your air conditioner serviced before the summer season starts to make sure it is running 100 percent efficiently.
