For goal setting to be effective your goals need to be SMART. SMART is an acronym and it stands for:
• S: Specific. Goals need to be specific.
• M: Motivational. You need to want to feel strongly enough to complete the goal.
• A: Action. Oriented. You need to do something.
• R: Relevant. The goal needs to have a meaningful place in your life and purpose.
• T: Time Oriented. Goals all need to have an end date.
If you follow a process like this, the end product is much more likely to occur and thus you achieve the intended outcome.
“Vague goals, produce vague results”: Jack Canfield author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and “Success Principles” said this. If you don’t really know what you want you wont get it. To keep on track it is always good to get in touch with the benefits the particular goal will give you when it is achieved.
We keep on towards the desired ends because we are motivated. To keep us inspired it is a good idea to go out to visualizing what happens when the objective is realized. Go out on your time line to the End State and see yourself being there. What does it look like, what does it feel like and what does it sound like? Give yourself the treat of enjoying the experience. Keep coming back to this place, because it will keep you on track, particularly at the outset. Once the goals begin to materialize it will feel so good, that you will intuitively grasp that this is the only way to go!
Make a list of the benefits that will come to you when your goal is realized: Let’s say you have plumbed for a long-term goal of electing to retire early. Make a list of the benefits this goal will bring you; Topics on your list will include: more free time for leisure activities, more time to spend with friends and family, the opportunity to practice a hobby or pastime and perhaps even be able to earn income from this recreational activity. If you are a painter, maybe you can work to hone your skills so that you can start having exhibitions and selling your paintings. Once the list clarifies you will see the benefits of the goal. Keep the list handy.
There is no point in writing a list and sticking it in a drawer. Put your list somewhere where you can look at it from time to time. This will keep you on track.
