How to Dispute a Credit Card Charge

Many of us forgo with checking one’s credit card purchases because the bulk is just too much to do. But checking your credit report is very important so that you can see errors on the report. Although mistakes rarely happen, they still happen.

Step 1

Find a quite time alone. Look at the credit report and your own purchase receipts or your own records. Compare them. Take your time. If you notice something that does not match, don’t react yet. You should look into the details, you might have just overlooked something, and this will save you from embarrassment.

Step 2

If you discover a mistake you can send your dispute through mail. It is better to send mail through certified mail. That way, you will have proof that you sent a dispute. Your registered mail will also mark the beginning of the investigation procedure. There are also lesser chances of being loss.

Step 3

Your note should contain a brief and concise statement of your problem. Put in your name and address so that they will know who is complaining. You can include your social security number because this will further identify that it is you. There might be some people who have the same name and address with you. You can include your date of birth; this is another source of identification for them. Some people would include other sources of identifications such as a driver’s license.

Step 4

In your letter you should state the name of the creditor or the company and the transaction that you did not make but was reflected on your report. Write down the dispute that you are disputing and want to be changed. This is very important since you are sending a dispute note. This is the meat of your dispute.

Step 5

To make things easier, you can send a copy of the credit report and encircle of highlight the errors. You should mention this in your letter and annex the report. You should make the proper references and point the authorities to the correct pages and numbers. This will prevent any misunderstanding.

Step 6

Make sure that your dispute letter is computerized, neat, and easy to read. The process might take longer if you write a dispute letter that is barely readable. Put your signature on your letter.

Step 7

If you do not receive any updates after thirty days, you can inquire about the progress. Or you can write another letter requesting for a status update. You should do frequent follows up then.

Step 8

If it is discovered that your dispute is legitimate, but your credit report is not yet changed, then you can initiate another dispute and you can inform them of the dispute that you previously did and the outcome of that dispute.

Lastly, you can do your disputes online if you think that writing a letter is going to take time. Or you can inform your creditors about the mistakes. You can ask them that they will be the ones to make the corrections.
