Once you get your credit card, you begin to get pre-screened offers or credit card offers. These are offers given by companies to get you to sign up for a new account, policy or credit card. These companies pre-approve you by looking through your credit report and they will check if you will meet their standards for their offer.

Aside from taxes and bills, another thing that people want to lose sight of in their mailbox is a credit card offer. There are so many credit card offers that tend to clutter our mailbox, home and office spaces. Sometimes, you keep them so that you can read them later but the truth is you forget about them or don’t have time to read them. If you think that you should stop receiving credit card offers, you should take action. It is your right to opt out of offers.

Step 1

Go online - Go to www.optoutprescreen.com, it is a website that allows people to opt-out of offers. Follow all the instructions provided in the website. You can choose to opt out of offers for five years or permanently. Bear in mind that not all credit card offers are useless. Some may even be the kind of offers that you need! Before permanently opting yourself out from offers, you may want to rethink that decision and just opt yourself out for a number of years. Once you opted out yourself, credit reporting agencies are not allowed to share your credit file to other companies. These companies cannot pre-approve you because they have never seen your credit file. But don’t expect that this will put a stop to all your credit card offer mail.

Step 2

You can also send snail mail to the four credit bureaus. Write a letter. Introduce yourself. State all relevant information like phone number, address, social security number, and birth date. Tell them that you want your name to be removed from the credit card offer list. You can send the same letters to the four credit bureaus. Just be sure to change the names of the recipients.

Step 3

If your prior action still does not satisfy you, use the telephone! Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT and follow the instructions that the voice recording will tell you. Be ready to provide your personal information when asked for such. If things go well, you will receive a mail within a few days. The mail is a “Notice of Election”. This number is shared by the four credit bureaus. So, this saves you time and effort from calling each one.

Opt outs are usually processed within 5 days. But it will take a few more days before credit offers will cease to be sent to your mailbox. If you tried to do everything in this article, yet you still keep on receiving credit card offers, check your account! You may have a joint account and if both of you don’t opt out, companies will still keep on sending offers. If you opted out yourself and later on change your mind, you can go to the same address or call the same phone number and follow the instructions given.
