Losing a job is one of the most stressful events in a man’s life. It brings with it self-doubt, decrease in self esteem and frustration. Accepting job loss is easier said than done because most of us value our job and we often identify ourselves with it. The economic side of it is even harder, knowing that your main source of income has been taken away from you. Being laid off, down sized, getting fired or dismissed, whatever your company calls it, hurts and it is even harder if you don’t know how to cope up with it. Here are some ways that might help you cope up:

Step 1

Seek benefits. You must be vigilant of your benefits. You must call your human resource department if you are eligible for separation pay, unused vacation leave pay, sick pay and other benefits that your company may offer. If you will not follow up the human resource department for these benefits, it will surely not take the first step to reach you considering other matters that they have to deal with. If your health insurance is being paid by your former employer, find out how you can maintain it by paying it personally. Also try to determine if you are eligible for the government’s unemployment benefits. If you are qualified, then don’t waste time to apply and do the paper works because the release of such benefit may take some time.

Step 2

Assess your financial capability and how long your resources will last. Determine other sources of income that may help you sustain while you are still looking for another job. You may get some amount from your emergency savings fund because that is actually intended for these times. However, try not to touch your savings for your kid’s college as much as possible. While looking for a new job, try to make some money from part time jobs such as tutorials, online writing or selling items on ebay.

Step 3

Consider a career change or change of industry. You must reflect whether a change in career path is necessary. If the industry you came from is prone to lay off and down sizing, then you must consider finding a new career in another industry. There are many fields which you might want to try such as those fast growing industries like BPO and customer care. These industries are on constant hiring and career growth is possible. But the major thing that you should consider in career change is: will you be productive in that new career and use your skills positively?

Step 4

Review your skills and try to acquire new ones. Try to develop the skills that you already have and acquire new skills which can be useful. Determine what skills are valuable to employers. Many of companies require above average computer and communication skills so you have to these. Acquiring new skills may be useful but make sure it will not waste your time, the time that you should spend for finding a new job.

Step 5

Waste no time in finding a new job. The brighter side of being laid off is you can get a new job with possibly better pay and benefits. Layoff is not the employees fault and employers do not take it against the job seeker. What the employer is more interested with is the experience you have in your former job. Just believe in your skills and you will be on your new job in no time.
