One of the best ways to save money is to know how much you are spending and what you are spending your money for. The best way to do this is to create a budget. Yet this is difficult for many people to do. Before you tackle the task of putting together a budget my recommendation is that you fully explore your attitude toward money.
It has been said that those who do not think money is important have never had any money. Maybe there’s some truth to that statement. Sometimes we place too much importance on money. It should not be a tool by which we measure success. Having money does make some things in life easier but everyone, rich or poor, has problems. Some individuals inherit or marry money while others work hard or make good investments. The common element in all financial situations is attitude.
A person’s attitude is developed as a child, influenced by those in their life. Children in homes where attitudes toward money are healthy and positive, adults exercise discipline in spending and saving, bills are paid on time and the value of money has a proper place are more likely to adopt these same attitudes. Whereas children in homes where there is never enough money, attitudes toward money are negative and adults live from financial crisis to financial crisis with little hope things will get better are likely to carry these attitudes over into adulthood.
Children do not have to repeat the behavior of influential adults in their lives. Experts say we can change our behavior in a short period of time but it sometimes takes years to change an attitude. To change an attitude requires you to go deep – really explore why you feel the way you do about certain things – evaluate if this is still true for you today. A lot of times two individuals with very different attitudes toward money marry. They should explore why they both feel the way they do and come up with alternative behaviors acceptable to both. That doesn’t always happen.
If your attitude toward money is negative, your attitude toward budgeting will also be negative. If your attitude is negative it is likely that you will sabotage your behavior and give up on budgeting before it has a chance to work. Money is one of the most critical issues in everyone’s life yet many individuals give very little thought to managing it. We say “where does all my money go” but we aren’t willing to keep track of our spending. Living on a budget is one of the best ways to save money.
