How to Avoid Spending Money
Step 1
Identify items as your needs or wants. The basic thing that you should know is the difference between needs and wants. In order to avoid spending your money, you must always identify whether an item is classified as a need or just a want. Needs are those items which we basically need to survive such as food, clothing, shelter. These basic needs however may turn into wants in already met and excess of it is already unnecessary. Take for example the case of clothes. Clothes may be considered as a basic need. But it becomes a want if you already have enough clothes to cove your body and buying more would just be an unnecessary expense. Needs are actually those items which cannot be postponed and wants are items that we can actually live without.
Step 2
Be aware of your daily spending by keeping track of it. You must be aware of what you spent for the day to know whether such is necessary. List down the items you bought and the price and determine whether that item is worth its price or will be useful to you. By being conscious of your daily expenses, you will be able prepare your daily budget which you must strictly observe. If you find your daily expense higher than you expected, try to examine and identify what should be eliminated from your daily spending.
Step 3
Bring only the amount of money that you need for the day. After knowing your daily cost of living, bring only enough money and leave the rest at home. Doing this, you will be able to avoid unplanned expenses and other temptations. If ever you come across something that you really like which is classified as a want, it will have to wait because you didn’t bring extra money. After a few days, and if the craving is still there, and the item is still available, it is time to ask yourself whether you have enough extra money to buy it. If you don’t have enough, remember that better items are always coming out the market.
Step 4
Save. Saving actually rewards you from not spending. The money that you manage not to spend will be accumulated and will grow. Saving allows you to prepare for the future whether it is for a new car, college, a vacation, retirement or for emergencies such as illness. Saving provides a sense of security and comfort that when hard times come, it need not be that hard.
Step 5
Wait. Avoid shopping on impulse and without examination. Wait for few days to test whether you really want that item or not. The price of the item may even drop if you wait longer. You might also consider asking friends who already bought the same item because if it is a fad, others have already bought ahead of you. Examine the item very meticulously. Just follow the golden rule in shopping: if in doubt, then don’t.
