OK you are considering filing for Bankruptcy. You will need a good attorney specialized in this rather complex field. How do you find one? The best way to find any professional is to get a referral.
What You Will Need:
- A computer with Internet Access.
- A Telephone.
- A notebook and pen.
Step 1
There are good bankruptcy lawyers and bad ones out there. You need to find a good one so ask your own lawyer for a referral. Failing that (you might owe him money and not want him to know you are considering filing for bankruptcy) discretely ask anyone you know who has had financial problems, what they suggest. People love giving advice. It appeals to their ego.
Step 2
Conversely you can get a list of lawyers from your State’s Bar Association.
Step 3
Set up an interview with the attorney. This is an exploratory interview and should cost you nothing. Interview the lawyer and see if you get a good feel. Do you feel he /she listens and answers all your questions? If they are off hand and impatient in any way you probably don’t want to work with this particular lawyer. Be sure to ask for an indication of cost and the fees involved. These should be in writing in case of future dispute.
Step 4
Notice the courtesy and consideration you get from the office staff. This will tell you a lot about the lawyer. If the staff is kind and courteous and seem happy and helpful, they are content in their work, and their employer is a good person.
Step 5
If you visit a big law firm, Ask to meet the lawyer who would be working with you on filing your petition either under Chapter 7 or Chapter 13.
Step 6
Make a selection from what feels best and set up a meeting to start work on filing the petition.
