Filling out a money order is not difficult. Here is a step by step guide to filling them out just in case you’re having trouble.

Step 1

You can purchase your money order in the following–Western Union, Currency Exchange, US Postal Office or even at some supermarkets. All post offices have this service since time immemorial and the service is the same with commercial companies but actually costs less. Postal office’s money order has been tested and usually has larger coverage.

Step 2

Before filling out the money order, make sure that is no markings in any of the page. Examine the money order form because any marking may alter the vital information such as address, amount or the payee. If you find that the form that you have has markings, do not hesitate to ask for another form, informing the in-charged of the markings. Use permanent blue or black ink from your ballpoint pen or sign pen. Do not use pencil in filling out the form as it can be erased or altered.

Step 3

Write your name in print in the space provided for “remitter” or “sender”. It is important that you write your complete name and the party you are sending to know the exact spelling of the name you indicated here. Inform the receive party ahead of your complete name to avoid problems. You can also write your account number and other identifying information in this space if no separate space is provided.

Step 4

Write the name of the person or company you are sending to in the space provided as “Pay to” or “pay to the order of”. Write also the account number or any identifying information here if no other space is provided so that if lost or fall into the hands of another person, it cannot be cashed or be returned to the proper party. Make sure that the name of the party you are sending is in correct spelling. A slight difference in the name can be fatal.

Step 5

Write in the space provided for addresses. Write your address in the space for “purchaser’s address” or “sender’s address”. If there is only one space provided for address, write your address, not the address of the party you are sending to. Most money orders do not provide for address of the payee or receiver, so it is safer to write your address than that of the receiver or payee. If there is space provided for “recipient’s address” or “receiver’s address”, put the address of the party you are sending to.

Step 6

Do not forget to sign the money order. Put you signature in the space provided as “sender’s signature”, “purchaser’s signature”, or plainly “signature”. Do not sign at the back of the form as it is intended for the receiver. Your signature means that you certify that all entries are true to your personal knowledge.

Step 7

Keep your receipt. The second copy of the money order serves as the receipt. It is in carbon copy and all entries you fill out must appear in your receipt. Your receipt is important as it may serve as basis for claims in case the money order is lost or failed to reach the intended receiver.
