Government bonds are bonds that are issued by the national government or simply referred to as debt obligations of the federal government and are often paid based on the currency denomination of a particular government. Government bonds are also referred to as sovereign bonds if the bonds are issued in a currency other than the currency of the government. As most who have purchased government bonds say, these types of bonds are the safest option to buy since the government backs the bonds. Also, these bonds are considered more risk-free since the government is always presumed to be solvent because it can pay on the maturity of the bond through its taxes and its revenues. Here are some simple steps on how to buy government bonds…
Step 1
Who issues government bonds - There are a number of agencies which issue government bonds. Usually, these are the agencies that are connected with the treasury department of a particular government. In the United States for instance, it is the US Treasury Department through the Bureau of Public Debt that issue bonds called ‘US Treasuries’ and are in US dollar denomination. In the United Kingdom, it is the United Kingdom Management Office which issues bonds called ‘Gilts’ which are in sterling denomination. In Germany, it is the German Finance Agency which issues bonds called ‘bunds’.
Step 2
Where to buy the government bonds - You can transact with a financial adviser who can help you on the process when you buy the government bonds if you have no actual knowledge on the purchase of such bonds. It is always advisable to seek professional help on matters like this. If you have once made a government bond purchase transaction then you may opt not to hire a financial adviser. Then you can also inquire from a local bank directly on what are the government bonds available for purchase. Another way is to go through a brokerage firm. You can also go directly to the government bonds issuers as explained in step1 and purchase directly from their departments such as the US Treasury Department and inquire on what bonds are available or even purchase government bonds online. You can simply visit the website, of the US Treasury Department such as the TreasuryDirect for instance, and choose from the available government bonds listed for purchase.
Step 3
What type of government bonds to buy - You should be able to decide what type of government bonds you want to purchase. You can buy federal bonds which are those issued by federal governments, and there are also municipal bonds which are issued by the local municipalities or the state governments. Most of the revenues from the purchase of municipal bonds go to the projects of the government and most of these bonds offer tax preferential treatments which encourage people to buy them. Federal bonds usually exempt the interests earned by the bonds from federal taxes and other associated taxes from the area where the bond was issued.
These are the basic steps on how to buy government bonds. Then you can also consider the liquidity and stability of the government’s economy before you decide which government bonds to purchase.
