Almost everyone makes a sudden career change sometime in their life. Perhaps you have come to a point that you have to choose a new career path. With this in mind, it is vital to make a lot of changes and sacrifices in your life. It will not only be your job, but might also include the benefits that you might have earned such as a 401k from your previous employer. You can actually transfer such benefits with your new employer.
Step 1
Ask for the transfer form – You have to ask for the transfer in order to transfer your 401k from your previous employer to your IRA. You can always continue your plans even if you shift careers. You can have your 401k funds transferred from trustee to trustee. But if you were to have it done indirectly without your assistance, it is best that you let your former employer be informed of the necessary documents and funds that they have to prepare to make the transfer go smoothly.
Step 2
Monitor the transfer – Ask for consultation if necessary on how you can make the transfer from your previous employer to the new one. It is best to monitor all these changes personally so you will know what is going on with your 401k plan and you will also be able to make the necessary adjustments. When you personally monitor the transfer, you can make yourself aware of any additional charges or deductions that may take place with your funds.
Step 3
Study the documentations and the needs for the transfer – Double check what are the adjustments that you should expect when you make the transfer of your 401k to your IRA. Study the limitations it might set for you. You have to be able to determine the amounts involved in case there will be differentials in the new payment for your investment. The duration of the transfer may vary, so it is best to inquire about this. All transactions will be observed and investigated for legalities. The process may take time in order to make sure that the transfer is accurate.
Step 4
Initiate the actions for the transfer – This involves the collaboration of you and your new sponsor.
Step 5
Always be informed – Before you transfer your 401k to your IRA and then to your new trustee, be informed on how you want this done. You can ask for your 401k funds to be wire transferred or your 401k funds to be received in a check form. Whichever way you decide to make the transfer, you have to be ready and be informed of the account numbers that you need to provide for the transaction. Anticipate any charges or deductions after the transfer.
