I am a former waitress…so I always leave 15-20%…if the service is truly exceptional (in rare instances) than maybe 25%.

I’ve never really liked the “gimme gimme” aspect of Halloween. I always let my kids dress up, have fun, and trick or treat a bit, but have also tried to put the emphasis on giving instead of getting. We do humble little family based community service projects, like putting costumes together for children in shelters from odds and ends we find around the house, then shop for completing pieces at the flea market or Goodwill, and occasionally fostering displaced families on Trick or Treat night. We put an AMAZING Pirates of the Caribbean costume together last year for one little guy. We probably spend as much money as anyone else would on the holiday so it may not save a lot , but we believe our traditions do something more important!

Borrow Halloween costumes from friends with kids slightly older than yours. Hand-me downs are great, because most likely the child only wore the costume once!

I have gotten my daughter’s Halloween costume at a local fall consignment sale every year. I have gotten adorable costumes for a fraction of what I would have paid at a retail store, and there has always been plenty of selection.

 If you ever visit Windsor Locks CT and it’s not too cold. Check out Old Newgate Prison in Granby Ct. It’s not too far away and the cost is a donation of a couple dollars. The countryside is beautiful and the underground prison is fairly interesting.

The Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) has a huge bike path system which is beautiful especially now with the trees reaching their fall peak and lots of lakes all with biking and walking paths. No charge to use the paths.

Jacksonville, Florida has many state parks and beaches. You can spend a full day at free or inexpensive places and then take in a local restaurant located on one of the many rivers or overseeing the beach.

 I’ve looked forward to shopping black Friday and have only done so once as an adult and I hated it. There were never any of the items available that I wantedand people are crabby. Waiting in line was the worst especially in cold Michigan.

Black Friday scares me!!! There are some crazy shoppers out there!!! I prefer to stay home that day.
