Every woman looks forward to the perfect wedding and the perfect wedding dress. The dress however, is one area where you can save some money keeping in mind that you are unlikely to have the opportunity to use it ever again. Here are some tips to save money on your wedding dress:
Beg, borrow, don’t buy: Wedding dresses can be rented or bought online if you don’t mind wearing a used one. E-bay sometimes has some exquisite wedding dresses available, and you can save quite a few dollars buying online. You can also save on gowns from vintage thrift stores. Another resource is your local resale clothes store, or the classified ads in your newspaper. And.. yet another option is to wear your mother or sister’s wedding dress. Dress it up with different corsages, and a totally different veil for a whole new look for your wedding dress.
Save on trimmings: Buy a classic wedding dress, but minimize the trimmings, like lace and beadwork, especially where they won’t be as visible like on the back, waistline or shoulders. Keep the silhouette simple. Remember that a gown with yards of fabric will cost far more than a simple sheath, which can look really elegant. Avoid custom alterations if possible.
Shop at sales: Most shops have sample sales twice a year and you can pick up a truly lovely wedding dress. Many shops have an annual close out sale and you can often pick up a designer dress marked down as much as 70%. Online bridal gown wholesalers and retailers may offer really good deals. You might end up spending a little extra on alterations and dry-cleaning, but you will still save dollars on that wedding dress! Keep track of when sales begin and end, and ensure that you get there early to get the best choices. Don’t neglect local dress shops either; you never know when the perfect wedding dress will show up at half the budget you expected!
Try a tailor: If you have access to a good seamstress, they can usually copy a designer gown at half the price. Friends in labor intensive countries can also help you get a dress tailored at half the price. A friend of mine sent a picture of her design to India with her measurements and got a gown at a tenth of the price it would have cost her normally.
Keep an open mind: Most women have their idea of a perfect wedding dress in their head, but don’t pass up trying on a dress just because it does not match the picture you have in your head. Don’t hesitate to try on a size larger or smaller also. Different styles fit differently, and clothes look different on the hanger as well as on mannequins. Your perfect wedding dress could be right in front of you, and you could save money too in the bargain.
