What is Ebay?

Ebay is an online marketplace built to allow trade among individuals at a local, national and international level. It has an easy to use platform facilitating the transaction between a buyer and a seller. As a seller, you have two options when adding a product, you can do the traditional auction starting with a minimum bid or you can use the “Buy it Now” option which allows people to buy it on the spot for the price you’ve chosen. Selling on Ebay is easy and lucrative when done right but for the sake of this article, we will just stick to using it to get rid of some of the clutter around the house.

How to Join up and Get Started?

The first thing you’ll want to do is register at Ebay.com. You’ll be shown the following registration page:

Make sure you fill out everything and don’t put any fake information. Once you’ve filled out all your personal information you’ll have to accept the user agreement and privacy policy and then you are ready for the next step. The next step consists of giving Ebay your bank information or credit card information. Once you’ve given them your info, you’re ready to sell. Ebay has a great help section for listing your items.

How Much Does it Cost?

To register, it will cost you nothing but Ebay will charge you an insertion fee for every item that you list. Here’s a table showing the different insertion fees:

Ebay also charges you a Final Value Fee once you’ve sold your item. The Fee is a percentage of the price that you’ve sold your item for.

The picture is pretty skewed but you can view both Ebay fees on their website here.

So for example lets say I want to sell my Ipod shuffle. I start the bidding at one dollar for 10 days. Ten days later I sell it for $34. My Insertion fee would be $0.35 and my Final Value fee would be $2.19(for the first $25) + $0.32 for the remainder of the $9 ($9 x 3.5% = $0.315) So I would have made $34 - $2.51 = $31.49

I Have More Questions

If you have any questions, I recommend you go to Ebay’s HELP section. It is very informative and helped me when I first started. Selling on Ebay is easy and fun. It’s worth trying out if you’re looking to sell some of your used stuff. Here are some questions often asked:
