What if I told you I have a gym membership? Yes I know I can workout at home for free and it doesn’t cost anything to walk or run around the block everyday. But being frugal isn’t about looking solemnly at the cost of an item; it’s also about looking at the benefits and how to use them wisely. Let’s take my $1 a day gym membership for example and let’s see what benefits I get from it……..
Fitness + Stress Release
The gym will have more options for cardio equipment and weights. The best part about going to the gym is knowing that you have help around if something was to go wrong. Also if you go to the gym you’re more likely to get a good workout, at home you are more likely to slack off. Feeling stressed? A common place for stress to occur is your workplace or home so it’s great to know you have a place to go where you can just let all the frustration out.
Showers
The gym close to my house just went under a large renovation and the change-rooms have huge showers. I sometimes go to the gym before work just to shower because it’s pretty empty at
Social
The gym is a great place to make friends or maybe even a new girlfriend/boyfriend. It only took me a few weeks to meet a handful of new people that had the same interests as me. Having your partner or friend to go with you is great because instead of meeting up at a restaurant or to a movie, you can meet up at the gym.
Relaxation
Did I mention my gym has a HUGE sauna and a nice swimming pool? Need I say more about this topic?
Getting Bored?
The chances of getting bored at home are very high especially if your equipment is limited. I don’t have that problem at the gym, not with the basketball net, the racket ball courts, the squash courts, the boxing room and the aerobics/cycling classes. Taking advantage of all these great activities is what makes my membership a good value.
So in conclusion, a gym membership can be a frugal purchase if you attend often(5-7 times a week), you take advantage of everything it has to offer and you use every aspect of the gym to your advantage. The gym not only aids me in my attempt to be a healthier person, but it also relaxes me, takes away stress, gives me a larger shower and gives me the opportunity to meet new people.

Got something to say?

I agree with you getting the gym membership, and I think it is the more frugal choice. All too often I see people who spend $1000 on exercise equipment, use it for two months, and then it just collects dust from then on out. At least if those people got the gym membership, they could cancel the membership when they got tired of going.
Of course in your case, it sounds like you’re a pretty avid fitness buff. Therefore, you’re gym membership is the frugal choice for other reasons…You dont have to do maintenance on your own equipment, paying to fix it when motors, flywheels, etc breakdown. Furthermore, at the gym you’re most likely working out on much higher quality equipment than you’d ever buy for your home gym.
