The day has arrived, and you’ve finally decided it’s time to let go. Something needs to be done because you’re tired of having to map an elaborate course in advance in order to descend into the basement. It’s filled with children’s toys from a decade ago, an extensive toaster collection and more junk then you could possibly allow to stay. Garage sale: that is what you say to yourself to simplify your cluttered life and make an extra buck or two with what you have been unintentionally collecting in your house. Despite how easy it may sound in your head, precautions must be made in order to ensure a successful and profitable garage sale.
The most important element to a successful garage sale is time. The more time that you allow yourself to have, the more preparations can be done to ensure that your garage sale is profitable. Giving yourself at least two weeks and a half’s worth of time allows for your garage sale to build some publicity. Post flyers around your neighborhood, in your local newspaper, and even online, to make sure that seasoned pros and the simply curious know that there is a garage sale going down.
Planning in advance gives yourself ample time to figure out what is going into your garage sale, because the hard part is actually cleaning your house and finding out what things you are selling at your garage sale and for how much. It is important that you go through any old items or antiques and check their prices to ensure that when your garage sale comes around you can get all the money that you can possibly get. Take the time to also sort items into boxes and containers, label them accordingly, and price each item large and legibly for each customer at your garage sale to see. Try to pick a day on the weekend, preferably a Friday or Saturday, for your garage sale that has the least likelihood of having bad weather. Even then, make sure you are prepared with tarps and the possibility of taking your sale indoors or rescheduling if on the day of your garage sale your blue sunny day ends up taking a turn for the worse.
Some of the easier stuff comes right before your garage sale is to take place. You want to make sure that you begin setting up for the garage sale the night before, so you can start the garage sale as early as possible. Set up all of your things in an easy to access place like the garage or inside by the front door, so everything can be quickly rolled out for your garage sale. When setting up, make sure that your register is in the center and clearly visible for all customers to see. Keep valuable items close by and plenty of change and dollar bills handy.
Ensuring a proper garage sale that is successful and profitable all depends on how much time you are willing to spend putting into it. If you take the time to plan ahead for your garage sale before the day arrives, not only are you guaranteeing a good turn out, but a lot of happy customers.
