Recent studies indicate that moderate consumption of beer has more health benefits than red wine. Now I’m not qualified to tell you how to save your heart, but what I’m going to do is tell you 5 ways to save on your beer expenses.

Choose where you buy from: Beer purchased in bars or restaurants is usually more expensive. You can save on beer by buying from retail stores. Save even more money on beer by buying at discount stores, or discount warehouses when possible. Buy beer by the case in preferences to a six pack.

Buy wisely: If you are fond of a particular brand, take advantage of the fact and purchase by the case while cashing in on discounts offered to save money on beer. If you are not particular about brands, then focus on buying discounted beer or take advantage of brands that are on sale. Remember however, that beer’s shelf life is six months on the outside, so you wont save if you overstock. Beer tastes best when fresh, so stock up on beer for not more than three to four months. Save on money and on taste!

Optimize storage: Store your beer well to prevent spoilage. Protect it from light by storing it in a cool, dark place. Both light and heat cause oxidation of beer which can skew the taste of the beer. The brown bottles are the best kind to buy to save your beer from oxidation. When pouring beer, pour slowly and tilt the glass - this will reduce the amount of foam in the cup giving you more beer to drink. Don’t dribble the beer down the side of the glass, but pour gently down the middle. Try to buy from brewers nearer to you. This reduces the chances of buying beer that has been transported long distance under not optimum conditions. While serving beer, serve it in a glass that has been washed with a minimum of soap, or preferably with baking soda.

Be Discount Savvy: Avail Happy Hour discounts when you do buy beer at bars or restaurants. Keep track of places offering special promotions and make a beeline for them when out on a beer binge. If you prefer to drink an expensive brand of beer, ensure you buy the expensive brand during happy hours. Once you have downed a few, switch to a cheaper brand – the taste probably wont matter as much by then, and you’ll save on the cheaper brand of beer when you are no longer paying happy hour rates! Scout for “save on beer” coupons that usually come with offers on barbeque items in the summer.

Brew It: If you have the time and space, consider brewing your own beer. A couple of “how to” books that will help you get started are The New Complete Joy of Home Brewing by Charlie Papazian, and Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers by Stephen Harrod Buhner. Beer is a social drink and is best drunk with friends. By brewing your own beer, not only will you save money on beer, you’ll become real popular with your friends!!
