Gardening has been the pass time of Kings and paupers alike. Gardening can be very therapeutic and at the same time very expensive. Whether you fancy a rose garden to rival the White House or a simple vegetable garden, there are ways to keep your gardening expenses down and keep the environment clean.

How many times have you jumped in the car to go to the local gardening center to buy the pre-grown perennials and annuals for your garden? If you want to save some money on the plants and flowers in your garden, try growing them from seeds. If you are a seasoned gardener and have the patients you can harvest the seeds from your own plants. A packet of seeds is a cheap way to keep your gardening affordable and your garden blooming year after year.

Aside from the plants, compost is probably the next biggest expense in the gardening arena. To be a true-green gardener, start your own compost pile from household food waste. All it takes is a few worms, food and other refuse and bit of elbow grease. I admit the smell takes a bit getting used to but the rewards are well worth it. Gardening has many aspects that are not pleasant and composting is one. Composting is recycling at its best!

For some, gardening is nothing but a chore. If your definition of gardening is pulling weeds and mowing the lawn, what I am about to say won’t make you very happy. Sometimes saving money means doing your own gardening. Skip the yard service and break out the lawn mower and rakes, throw on the gardening gloves and dig in Even if the you hate to garden, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you saved yourself some hard-earned money.

Gardening can take you levels of frustration when it comes to staying ahead of the bug eaten plants and fungus infestation. Most gardening and do-it-yourself centers offer a wide variety of traditional and organic insecticide and fungicide options. Some of these products are very expensive, while others just add pollution and toxic chemicals to your garden and environment. Search the Internet for organic, nontoxic insecticides and fungicides you can make for pennies a gallon. Did you know that ground up flowers and non-detergent soap makes a great insect repellent?

Free plants you say? You might find that your local nursery is tossing a few plants into the compost bin. You may need to give these plants a bit of attention at first, but that is what gardening is all about. Nurturing and keeping a plant beautiful is what the gardening aficionado lives for. Get to know your gardening center owner or manager and you never when you may be able to get something for nothing.

Remember that gardening is a wonderful way to spend your free time. If you know a few simple tricks of the trade, you can keep gardening for years to come without draining your wallet.
