How to Save Money Grocery Shopping
Step 1
Prepare a list. You have to identify the items that you actually need to buy. Do not include in the list items which are unnecessary or useless. After you have finished your list, review it and try to estimate how much quantity to buy for each and try to estimate the expense for each item. By having a slightly high estimate, you can carry only enough money for your grocery items. You will also avoid unnecessary purchases and be able to stick with your list by doing this. If ever possible, leave your kids at home. Not bringing kids for groceries actually saves you a lot of money, time and energy. Just ask your kids what would they want and tell them that you will see if you get it for them. Include their requests in your list but in less priority and do not try to buy them everything they want.
Step 2
Buy items on sale or bargain. There are items which are marked on sale and you actually get a good deal out of it. Most items on sale are either on promotion, surplus or about to go beyond its best before date. But make sure items you buy on sale are not yet expired and still of good quality. You must know when an item is a bargain and you still have to decide if you actually need those bargained items. If they are bargained or on sale but not included in your list, you might as well leave it. Items on sale are only great when you got to save money because you need to buy it in the first place.
Step 3
Buy in bulk. Buying in bulk actually lets you save more on the price. This is because bulk items and bigger and require the company less expense in packing them. That is why they are cheaper than smaller packages when you compute them by grams or quantity. Best items to buy in bulk are items which you often use such as sugar, milk, and other staple items. Make sure that you repack them when you get home to preserve its freshness. Also non-perishable items such as toiler paper are best buy in bulk. Avoid buying brands. Generally, grocery items are all the same and they only differ in price because of packaging or the amount the company spent for its advertising.
Step 4
Learn how to cook different dishes for your family. By learning how to cook, you can eliminate processed food from your grocery list which actually has higher prices. Buying ingredients for your favorite meal is cheaper that buying pre-packed and processed ingredients which actually taste odd. You can save a lot of money not just from your grocery bills if you know how to cook. Let your family enjoy your cooking instead of the usual restaurant or fast food meals you order. And the food you cooked, especially the tasty ones, can be enjoyed by your family in more than one meal.
Step 5
Don’t buy groceries on credit. Bringing just enough money for your listed grocery items and leaving your credit card at home will help you avoid unnecessary and unplanned expenses. Credit card brings a temptations and with it, you might be able to buy items which are not included on your list.
