Oil prices have reached record highs and it seems they are set to go even higher. Certainly use your car less often but when you do have to use it here are some tips that will help reduce your fuel costs.

1. Drive according to local speed limits. Accelerate gently and avoid harsh braking. Always use the highest gear practicable.

2. Make sure you have your tires inflated to the correct pressure. Under inflated tires always use more fuel.

3. Have your tracking checked. Misaligned wheels cause more resistance, which makes the engine work harder, and this uses more gas. Often you have to spend money to save it!

4. Avoid using the air conditioning whenever possible. The air conditioner puts a bigger load on the motor and that will mean higher gas consumption.

5. Have you car serviced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. New plugs and an engine tune up including an oil change will again increase your gas mileage.

6. Avoid traffic jams. If your commute to work involves sitting in a traffic jam your vehicle will be running hot and consuming a lot of gasoline. Try using public transport or join a car pool to cut costs.

7. Open windows increase drag and thus increase air resistance that in turn means the car uses more energy to move you forward. Close the windows when possible. This does not mean you turn on the air conditioner instead. In cooler weather and during the evening closed windows are perfectly possible.
