1. Garage Sales - You’ll always find books at garage sales. Unfortunately the selection is slim and most of the time dated.
2. Thrift Stores - I’ve actually found quite a few good books at my local thrift store. Once again the selection is small but the prices are amazing.
3. Used Book Stores - Probably the most common place but I find the prices to be a little high for a used books.
4. College - My local college has used book sales quite often and the deals are pretty fantastic.
5. Amazon.com - This is probably the best place for selection and sometimes price. Thousands of people have seller accounts on amazon.com and compete for your business by slashing prices. Often, you’ll find books for a penny because the seller’s make a small profit off the shipping. A few things to note about used books at amazon though:
a) You pay shipping on each book and there is no free shipping if you spend over X amount of dollars.
b) The condition of the book is chosen by the seller and not amazon. The condition of the book could be far worse than what the seller tells you. But you have the option of feedback(that can be viewed by anybody) and all sellers hate bad feedback.
For example, I want to buy Falling Man: A Novel (Hardcover) by Don Dellilo. So I go to Amazon.com and search for the book. Once I’ve found the book, I see a new price of $17.16. If I look down about two inches, I can see 111 used or new starting from $5.13. I click on the used and new link to find all 111 books, their shipping price and their condition. I scroll down halfway through the page to find out that I can buy a brand new book for $5.15 with $3.99 shipping. That’s almost half of what Amazon.com is asking for.

Got something to say?

And of course there’s a place you can read for 100% off: the local library. Last time I checked over 80% of the books on my “wish list” were available at the library to check out for free.
